Guest guest
>I was interested to read that BSST said that "ultimately kirtana is >superior to japa". I hadn't come across this before and wondered if you >(or anyone else) can expand on this. Where does BSST say this and what is >the explanation given? Here kirtana refers to loud or audible chanting. So kirtana can even be performed on the beads, if one is loudly chanting. Srila Haridasa Thakura in Hari Naam Cintamani gives the answer: "Many elevated pure devotees at times chant aloud the holy names on their beads, and then at other times meditate upon Krsna's pastimes on the beads. The advantage of performing kirtan, or audibly chanting the maha-mantra on the beads, is that three kinds of devotional service i.e. hearing, chanting and remembering are accomplished simultaneously." Also Haridasa Thakura quoted a verse in Chaitanya Bhagavat to the smarta brahmana which states that loud chanting or kirtana is 100 times more powerful than silent chanting, because it benedicts not only the chanter but every living entity which happens to hear the loud chanting of Hare Krishna. I am trying to find that verse. I had it but I lost it.
