These are actually four prayers. The first ends here. It is from the

Brhad-aranyaka Upanishad, 1.3.28

 

"From the unreal (asat) lead me to the real (sat)!

From darkness lead me to light!

From death lead me to immortality!"

 

 

> SARVESAM SVASTIR BHAVATU

> SARVESAM SHANTIR BHAVATU

> SARVESAM MANGADAM BHAVATU

>

> SARVESAM PURNAM BHAVATU

> LOKAH SAMASTAH SUKHINO BHAVANTU

 

This is the second prayer. It is simply a traditional Hindu prayer. I am not

aware of any sastric reference for it.

 

"May there be good for all,

may there be peace for all,

may there be ausoiciousness for all,

may there be fulfillment for all,

may the whole world be happy!"

 

 

> OM TRYAMBAKAM YAJAMAHE

> SUGANDHIM PUSTIVARDANAM

> URVA RUKAMIEVA BHANDANAT

> MRITYOR MUKSHIR MA AMRITAT

 

This is the third prayer. It is a prayer to Lord Siva. It is very popular

and is part of many sastras:

 

Rg-Veda Samhita 7.59.12

Vajasaneyi Samhita (Yajur-Veda) 3.60

Taittirya Samhita 1.8.6.2

Mahanarayana Upanishad 13.18

Tripura-tapini Upanishad 1.3

Vana-durga Upanishad 10

Linga Upanishad 1

 

"We worship Lord Siva the three-eyed one, the one who is the master of all

senses and qualities and the one who is the sustainer of all growth. May he

release us from the bondage of death as a ripened cucumber is released from

its stalk and may he (not deprive us of immortality) grant us immortality."

 

 

These three first prayers are all very nicely chanted on the CD "Chants of

India", with Ravi Shankar, produced by George Harrison in 1997.

> MAHAPRABHU DEEP KARATA HI KEVALAM

> OM SHANTI SHANTI SHANTI

 

This one I do not know. Must be some Hindi chant, judging by the "deep"

thing. I cannot give you an authorized translation but tentatively it should

mean something like:

 

"I am not the actor, the Supreme Lord is the actor. The great master,

Maha-prabhu, is the only actor."

 

"Peace, Peace, Peace."
