Determining whether vanilla ice-cream is eatable is Krsna katha.

"The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins because

they eat food that is offered first for sacrifice." (Bg. 3.13)

 

You can find further explanations in the Srimad-Bhagavatam about offering food

to Krsna and making sure it's offerable. To determine if devotees can eat

ice-cream means it is related to Krsna katha for the devotees are related to

Krsna. If the devotee is eating the ice-cream for the satisfaction of his

tongue, then he is not acting as a devotee (BG 3.13).

 

Your other points are valid about trying to avoid palatable dishes for our own

satisfaction.
