in the 1968 seattle temple tapes Srila Prabhupada sets the measure straight:

"don't eat outside ice-cream"

duality. Finite and infinite living entities. Kåñëa is infinite, and the

ordinary living entities are finite. (sound of bells from ice cream truck)

What is that? (music of ice cream truck)

Viñëujana: Ice cream truck.

Prabhupäda: Oh, ice cream. (laughter) You are taking ice cream? Huh?

Viñëujana: No. They go up and down the street.

Prabhupäda: Canvassing?

Tamäla Kåñëa: Yes.

Prabhupäda: Don’t take ice cream. (music continues louder in background)

(laughs) This is mäyä. (laughter) “Come on, come on, enjoy me. Come on, come

on, enjoy me.” (laughs) As soon as you enjoy, you become entrapped. That’s

all. Just like fishing tackle. They throw the tackle and invite the fish,

“Come on, come on, enjoy me. Come on, come on, enjoy me.” As soon as—Ap!

(laughter) Finished. Then, (sound imitating fish) “Where you go now? Come on

in my bag. Yes, I’ll fry you nicely.” You see? So these are all explained in

the Çrémad-Bhägavatam. The fish is losing his life by eating, by tongue. He

cannot check the dictation of the tongue; therefore he is losing his life.

You see? Similarly the animals, deer, in the jungle, the hunter, they play

very nice flute and all of them assemble to hear how he’s nice, and then he

keeps him in the trap, loses his life. That means hearing. Tasting, hearing.

And the elephant is caught by sexual... Do you know how elephant is

captured? Yes. A she-elephant is trained, goes to the male elephant, and it

follows, and the male elephant is dropped into a, what is called, big pot,

pit. Yes. Then he remains there for some time. Then he’s shackled and he’s

taken away. In this way there are different examples of senses. The, what is

called? That black, what is called, bhramara? English? That black big fly?

(makes buzzing sound) Onnnhhh.

Prabhupada said that if you make it yourself you can offer it and eat it,

and he used to eat it in New Vrndavna. I was there in June 1976 and he ate

it there at that time. As below:

(Prabhupäda is eating something:) What is this fiber? Finding? What are

other things are there in the... Hmm? What is this? (Hari-çauri laughs) Hmm?

Do they add anything more? Something reddish there?

Hari-çauri: Sometimes there’s a few bugs in it. (laughs) There’s some...,

it’s probably some strands from the mango, fiber from the mango.

Prabhupäda: Do they add mango?

Hari-çauri: Yes, sometimes they put different fruits in it.

Pradyumna: Little oranges in there. You can put orange?

Hari-çauri: Strawberry and mango and this and that. They make it with some

kind of ice cream machine.

Prabhupäda: Hmm? This is not from machine?

Hari-çauri: No, this is from machine.

Pradyumna: You first made ice cream in New York, Çréla Prabhupäda? Someone

told me that in 26 Second Avenue, did you make..., you made them ice cream

when it was very hot?

Prabhupäda: Hot?

Pradyumna: It was hot, no, the weather was hot, so you made.

Prabhupäda: No, you can make ice cream in this, what is called,

refrigerator. You can make.

Hari-çauri: Just make thick cream and put it in the fridge.

Puñöa Kåñëa: “Ice” cream.

Prabhupäda: (Prabhupäda speaks some gibberish). Big, big words.

He said you asked us to pray to Kåñëa before, he said, but he doesn’t feel

qualified to pray to Kåñëa. But he asked that you please pray to Kåñëa for

us, because we cannot pray to Kåñëa directly. We don’t know Kåñëa. But if

you ask Kåñëa, Kåñëa must be sure to fulfill your desire. So would you

please pray to Kåñëa to stay with us? ’Cause you’re His pure devotee, Kåñëa

will certainly grant what you pray for. So on our behalf... I think He must

want you to come to the palace, Çréla Prabhupäda, if it is possible.

Prabhupäda: I wish...

Kulädri: You wish? Then come at once. I think that will make Him very happy.

Prabhupäda: But unless I become little strong, how can I go?

Kulädri: Hm. So we’ve also brought some sweets and ice cream, but just now

is not so good for you to take it. The ice cream is not so good for you to

take just now, so shall we keep it for you?

Prabhupäda: Distribute.

Kulädri: You’ll take one little taste, Çréla Prabhupäda? You’ll take one

little taste? (Prabhupäda takes taste)

Prabhupäda: First class.

Kulädri: Thank you, Çréla Prabhupäda.

Prabhupäda: Fruit juice?

Tamäla Kåñëa: Fruit juice? Yes. What kind do you have, Upendra, that you

could make? Some grape juice? Or do you have that pomegranate? Would you

like some pomegranate, Çréla Prabhupäda?

Prabhupäda: I did not like that.

Tamäla Kåñëa: It’s bitter.

Upendra: That’s because they mixed it with honey.

Tamäla Kåñëa: They made it with honey, Çréla Prabhupäda, instead of

miçri-jala. What kind would you like to have?

Prabhupäda: That other fruit?

Tamäla Kåñëa: Sweet lemons? Do you find that you have a good result with

drinking that kind of juice at night? You don’t have any reaction in any

way? Causing mucus or something? It’s okay?

Devotee: We could make an ice cream shake.

Tamäla Kåñëa: So Upendra will make it? All of the devotees are very excited

about your travel plans, Çréla Prabhupäda. (laughter) Maybe Bhagatji will

come also.

Prabhupäda: Yes. (laughter) He likes the Mäyäpura.

Tamäla Kåñëa: Bhagatji had not heard yet, Çréla Prabhupäda. Bhagatji had not

been informed yet of your traveling plans.

Dr. Gopal: Miçri water. You like it?

Prabhupäda: Hm hm.

Dr. Gopal: What else you can take?

Prabhupäda: Hari-näma.

Guest (1): Hari-näma, hari-näma. (laughing)

Dr. Gopal: Yes. Yes, I understand. For your body, I can say. Can you take

little bit of ice cream or cold custard?

Prabhupäda: Yes.

Dr. Gopal: Then please ask somebody to bring it.

Prabhupäda: Best thing hari-näma.

Tamäla Kåñëa: Best thing.

Prabhupäda: Let me hear Hare Kåñëa and peacefully pass away.

But he did not eat ice cream then, only custard, so it appears here that

even indian made outside ice cream he did not eat.

Devotee (2): Here’s the... We brought custard for you.

Prabhupäda: What is that?

Upendra: We’re going to give you a little... It’s custard.

Bhavänanda: Dr. Gopal wants to give you some custard, some cold custard.

Dr. Gopal: I want to see the reaction after that, you have. You can give

two-three cloves(?) so that he can take. Is it sweet enough to give you

taste? I think we just want that Complan, and he just take only custard and

ice cream, dhaniyä bread, that’s all. Just stick to only these four things

now. And then you can increase. Any amount of things, you can... How do you

feel now? Do you like warm thing or cold thing?

Prabhupäda: Cold are better.

Dr. Gopal: Cold better. Liking is towards cold rather than towards hot.

Guest (1): Ice cream?

Dr. Gopal: Don’t worry about this passing of flatus, stools, every time by

the urination. You should not worry. Because a scab(?) is still there, this

will be unavoidable(?). Otherwise you can give a little soft enema so that

that scab should come out, and so there is no spurious(?) there, a little

one is coming out every time with the eating.

Prabhupäda: We are not worried.
