Give me, oh Lord,

patience to tolerate what is my destiny

courage to vanquish adversity and to put order

and the intelligence to decide between both options

I have heard many times this verse from members of the hindu community, but

never read it in Srila Prabhupada´s books. It is bonafide? Somebody knows?

Sounds like a version of the first part of the"serenity prayer" that is

used by AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and others. It goes:

GOD, grant me the serenity

to accept the things

I cannot change,

Courage to change the

things I can, and the

wisdom to know the difference.

It was written by Reinhold Neibuhr in 1926

The last 4 verses of the prayer are:

Living ONE DAY AT A TIME;

Enjoying one moment at a time;

Accepting hardship as the

pathway to peace.

Taking, as He did, this

sinful world as it is,

not as I would have it.

Trusting that He will make

all things right if I

surrender to His Will;

That I may be reasonably happy

in this life, and supremely

happy with Him forever in

the next. Amen

When I first read this saying, many years ago, it was attributed to a

Christian saint, St. Augustine perhaps. Or maybe it was Marcus Aurelius.

Sorry, my memory is good but short. But I distinctly remember it was a

very old prayer. It might have been used for the AA prayer.
