While I probably would not use this verse for standard preaching (for the reasons that you mentioned - it's not found in any extant Padma Puraana today), there is good reason to defend its existence. When Baladeva Vidyabhuushana represented the Gaudiiya Vaishnavas at the historic conference in Jaipur, he found that the validity of our sampradaaya was being challenged *on the grounds that there were only four sampradaayas* as per the Padma Puraana. So the idea of four sampradaayas must have been widely accepted in North India at least.
