Krsna kanhaiya

---------------------------

Dear Prabhu

Thank you for your information. I immediately informed my father who had

been

the assistant District Commissioner in Cawnpur (Kanpur) in British times.

This

was a good opportunity to preach to him and is much appreciated.

Namas tubhyam. Jaya Prabhupada!

Unfortunately, it seems, Kanpur has seen better days. Now Kanpur

is the chief source of pollutants which are dumped unceremoniously into

the sacred Ganga. (Frankly, it must be admitted that the British took

better care of many things than the Indians have since independance, but

that's another matter, for which there are also exceptions). Much of the

pollution of the Ganga is produced from Kanpur's infamous leather

industry. There are no big or famous temples there that I'm aware of,

although someone who knows better may correct me. But Shrila Prabhupada

several times appreciatively mentioned one (private?) Dvarakadhish temple

in Kanpur, which belongs to the family of Sir Padampat Singhania, one of

Prabhupada's early preaching contacts. I don't recall exactly where this

quote is, but Prabhupada cited their practice of home Deity worship as

traditional, ideal, and exemplary for other well to do householders.

Of course, originally Kanpur was known as kanyAkubja (in

Sanskrit), and it was a great center of brahmanical culture; Kannauji

brahmanas are still celebrated in some quarters (they are one from among

the traditional "panca-gauda" classification of North Indian brahmanas,

cf., Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Madhya-lila, chapter 18, text 134). Ajamila

of Bhagavatam fame was one of these high-class brahmanas, but he fell down

due to his injudicious association. Traditional people of the outlying

regions west of Kanpur speak Brajabhasha, the language of the Vrajavasis;

hence it is quite possible that the city's name indeed indicates their

hero, Krishna Kanhaiya.
