overlapping of yugas

My meager understanding is that this overlapping took place as the aftermath

of the curse of Gautama rsi on his not-so-good wife, AhalyA, who was guilty of

an extramarital affair in Satya yuga. He, realising her impropreity by his

mystic power, cursed that lady to become stone until Lord Ram would come and,

by touching her with His lotus foot, free her from that cold and stony fate.

She, in great anxiety, pleaded with her husband to shorten her length of

suffering since Lord Rama's apperance in Treta yuga was over a million years

away. Therefore Gautama rsi switched the yugas around thus shortening the

punitive sentence to mollify his desperate patni. However, there may be other

reasons as well.
