Guest guest
Dear Tadiya-seva Prabhu, please accept my respectful obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and all other Vaisnavas! All glories to Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai and Sri Sri Radha-Govinda! > Is there also a relationship between lust and greed? Any comments? The greed, or in Sanskrit 'lobha', develops from rajo-guŠa (see BG 14.17), but this a rather general description. If we go into details, then it looks like that. Lobha is always mentioned in connection with both k€ma (lust) and krodha (anger) (see e.g. SB 1.2.19, 1.6.21.p, 1.6.35, 1.14.3, 3.25.16 (Srila Prabhupada writes in the purport to this verse: K€ma and lobha are the symptoms of material existence.), 4.25.24.p, 8.3.27.p, 10.4.27, etc. So, lobha is closely related to k€ma and krodha. But also more common discriptions are found: e.g. SB 5.11.16, 5.14.27, 9.8.25, etc. Now, from SB 7.15.20.p ("When strong lusty desires [k€ma] for sense gratification are unfulfilled, one becomes angry [krodha]. This anger [krodha] can be satisfied when one chastises his enemy, but when there is an increase in lobha, or greed, which is the greatest enemy caused by rajo-guŠa, the mode of passion, how can one advance in KŠa consciousness?") we finally learn that lobha develops from krodha. This is the actual answer to Your question. An example of being affected by lobha is seen in e.g. BG 1.37-38 (lobhopahata-cetasaƒ), SB 3.9.7 (lobh€bhibh™ta-manasaƒ), SB 3.30.11 (lobh€bhibh™taƒ), etc. In SB 1.14.5 & 1.15.37 lobha is found as one of symptoms of Kali-yuga. Lobha in person is seen to be one of six sons of Mar…ci (see SB 10.2.8.p). But the most important thing for us, servants of Vaisnavas, is written by Srila Prabhupada in SB 7.9.1.p: "K€ma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada and m€tsarya—lust, anger, greed, illusion, pride and envy—all have their proper use for the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His devotee." This is that what we know under the term of yukta-vairagya. There is even such a thing like prema-lobha (CC Adi 4.136), and there is lobha for chanting of Lord Krsna's holy name (CC Antya 3.256). Your most unworthy servant, Sergei. Hare Krsna.
Guest guest
Dear prabhu, Pamho agtsp! If I may put in my two-cents' worth, I do believe Çréla Prabhupäda and the previous Äcäryas have taught that the six stages delineated by Çré Kåñëa in Ch 2 of Gétä are progressive stages (or should I say regressive, since it is a falling of consciousness.) 1. 'dhyayato': First we have the contemplation of sense objects by the senses 2. 'sangaù': This 'innocent' act produces an attachment for the objec in question on the part of the observer 3. 'kämaù': Attachment produces lust, which prompts the entity into action aimed at gratifying that desire 4. 'krodhaù': When that endeavour is obstructed or merely hindered, the frustration experienced produces anger, a state in which the intellect is controlled by the mind (instead of vice-versa). 5. Greed: ready to do anything, any which way, to appease the anger - must have 'it' 6. Illusion: unable to see things in truth as they are due to overwhelmed mind 7. Loss of memory: in illusion, one forgets the ultimate goal of his life and is ready to do anything even if it is detrimental to his progress 8. Falldown: one becomes victim of his senses, mind, and desires etc, lust anger and greed degrade him to hell. Hope its useful to you... pls tell me what you think. I just typed this off the top of my head from memory - didn't' look up the folio or anything. Do you have any references on this lust-greed relationship? Pls share with me. thank you prabhu pamho Yr servant dina Tadiya-seva.BVTS (AT) bbt (DOT) se [Tadiya-seva.BVTS (AT) bbt (DOT) se] Sent: Tuesday, December 21, 1999 3:22 AM To: COM: (Krsna) Katha Subject: Lust and greed [Text 2872986 from COM] Dear devotees, PAMHO. AGTSP. In the Gita Sri Krsna says that there are three gates that lead to hell, namely lust, anger and greed. Elsewhere in the Gita it has also been stated that it is lust that causes us to act in impure ways even against our will. This lust becomes anger when it is not satisfied. In other words, lust and anger are related as lust becomes anger. Is there also a relationship between lust and greed? Any comments? Thank you very much in advance.
