chanting rounds for others' benefit

Nowadays it is quite common that devotees profess to chant extra rounds for

others' benefit, for example to petition Krishna that their husband become a

devotee.

 

Although performing beneficial activities for others is central to Vedic

culture (e.g. it is the prime reason for getting married), does this

specific practice of chanting for others have a precedent in Vaisnava

tradition?
