We can address the issues from any vantage point, as everything is connected. We are limited in our ability to percieve or act, so we need to choose a vantage point to address the issues from. Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 8: Chapter Twenty-four, Text 5 :PURPORT Without protection of cows, brahminical culture cannot be maintained; and without brahminical culture, the aim of life cannot be fulfilled. Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 1: Chapter Nineteen, Text ; :PURPORT Cow protection means feeding the brahminical culture, which leads towards God consciousness, and thus perfection of human civilization is achieved. To try to address issues from a vantage point that does have at it's base cow protection is one I am not comfortable with personally. I accept Srila Prabhupada's opinion as above expressed, that without cow protection, other vantage points will not be sustainable over the long term. To protect cows you need land that is sheltered from being lost. Where we don't control government, we can use Trusts to secure ownership of land and proper land useage. The administrators of those Trusts would have ksatriya type responsibilities, and have the land to let out to share croppers, thus the 25% thing starts to be addressed. To have cow protection, you need cow herders. To develop loyal cowherders that will stick it out for the long haul, you need to have a society that can attract and hold them. Start at the root. I do not see Simple Living and High Thinking as "going back", I se it as going forward. We become blind to this fact when we are mired in the modern civilization of technology-dependency. Regular breaks from it to visit the country and forests develops finer tissues of the brain which in turn enlighten us. > the aborted project > of trying to live a virtuous life on the farm without first instilling social > values and sensitive human connections. We tend to make things more complicated than necessary. We think we should only "do" varnasrama-dharma if we can do it "perfectly". We don't do anything perfectly so we just end up on the mental platform thinking "if only...". Varnasrama-dharma can be started immediately by us crude pioneers - that's the idea! "Ultimately the aim of varnasrama-dharma is to turn a crude man into a pure devotee of the Lord, or a Vaisnava." SB 1.2.2 We don't first become pure and spiritually advanced THEN take up varnasrama-dharma. It's the other way around. yfs, Jd
