In this particular case, as is often the case, the manager just wanted to wield his own personal powers. My experience in ISKCON is that each time I do blind following of managers against my own conviction, it turns out bad. This does not necessarily mean that I am against authority, rather the opposite. It is a tricky thing. I think it depends very much on who you are and who the authority is. I have seen many devotees who wield their independence, and gets into trouble because of that. The solution is that we simply gets recognition who we are, which group of society we belongs to (varna), and gets treated thereafter. Different people requires different treatment, but this treatment can grossly be categorized according to varna. We have the well-known advice that to get your will through you should: - cite the vedas if you are speaking with a brahmana - praise the ksatriya - bribe the vaisya (I have seen different versions of this one) Can, for example, a vaisya manager give orders to a ksatriya or brahmana? Should a ksatriya or brahmana follow such an order, if they don't think it is good?
