NAD Prabhu We can get the nitrogen refills. We are trying to keep a breed of Indian cow that is nearly extinct thru the misguided policies of the World Bank and other donor agencies who had help sponsor the disastrous 'green revolution' in India. They introduced western cows and have tryed to develop a succesfull crossbreed that would produce more milk. Unfortunatly the result is an animal that is less disease tolerant and the bull cows are not very good in the field. This has led to more and more animal slaughter, as the bulls are an unwelcome expense for the poor farmers, because they are not good at labouring in the fields. If we are serious about varnashrama or sustainable agriculture, we must try to preserve the animals that have been bred for this kind of lifestyle. I do not know how much these containers cost, but they are very usefull for our breeding. We will be sharing the sperm with a few others who are also trying to maintain this breed (Red Sindi cows), including Mayapur. If we can get the longer lasting one, it would be better, however the small one would be good if the larger one is too expensive. ys Abhirama

Perservation of heritage breeds is a great thing. Each area should be doing research as to the best breeds for their area. Good work. We got the best from the Tamal Nadu government dairy, who are the only serious breeders of this variety left. Five excellant cows, who will produce 8 to 12 leatres per day during peak lactation and will also produce really fine bulls for our fields. One nearby temple go-shalla has also started breeding these cows and they will be keeping a bull for breeding, so we can share genetic diversity. I hope to introduce this variety into the Mayapur heard as well. There is another local cow here, called 'Malnad Giddi, that is very small, gives about 2 liters per day of sweat milk that has a butterfat content of 7 or 8%!!! The fat has a very fine grain that is like goat milk, in that it is very easy for babys and old people to digest. We are planning to find some of these for our goshalla someday also. Thanks for the encouragement. ys Abhirama
