Certainly these things are very real concerns with us living in the world of birth, death, disease, etc. Not that we pretend we are beyond these things, as was the case in certain instances of child abuse. I suspect such diseases also existed in the glory days of Vedic village life. Disease is always available for conditioned souls, though hopefully not so much of a problem for those living as brahmanas.
