I think many chooses their guru out of "social pressure". I for one did (partially), I can see that when I look back. When a person has so many followers (nice ones too), when he seems to have all the answers to all questions, when everybody thinks he would be a nice choice, when you also think he is a nice person, when there are not anyway so many others to "choose", then what will you say when somebody tells you that you "have" to have a guru (the sooner the better) to perform devotional service as best as possible. How can anyone (new bhakta from the street) tell if a guru will fall?? Kali-yuga means there are risks everywhere, and being a guru is a great risk to take, because you need to forsake "the world" and be real humble. That´s very, very difficult, nowadays. I think the prospect disciple should be informed that he also is taking a risk. and he should be well aware of the depth of the relationship. (Tough one when you are young and proud.) Sometimes the vows are made to look very easily: "Follow the four regulative principles, chant Hare Krishna and there you go." It´s not always that simple, as history has shown. We should not be so keen on making initiates in ISKCON, imho, rather we should work on the basis, being happy in chanting, dancing, eating prasadam, etc, and then wait for people to THEMSELVES step forwards, if they want to be more involved. Personally I would have liked that. In my case a picture of Sri Visnupada was directly put on my alter with the remark, "you need this one to make it perfect". Anyway, I still think it was Krishnas arrangement amd I´m very grateful to the devotees and former Harikesa Swami for what they did. your servant Trayimaya dasa PS: Hare Krishna tolerant readers, I hope you´ll bear with the "non-varnasram" topic.
