Truss supports for caves, tunnels

Is there anyone out there who can guide me to a reference about truss

supports for a cave or tunnel.

Maybe someone in the vicinity of the West Virginia mines would have some

suggestions.

My son wants to dig a cave in the side of the mountain -- in fact, he's

already got a good start. (He thinks he could live in it, I think he

could use it for a root cellar.) Problem is, I don't want it to come

crashing down and kill him. He needs to know how to put some support

beams in to truss it up, but I don't know where to get advice.

Any suggestions?

It's all longwall mining here now - they just take out the coal and

let the overburden cave in. It destroys all the springs and wells, so

they bring in city water to all the country folks who lose their water.

I would think there would be some sort of book about old fashioned

mining though. It is basically just post and beam.

Have you tried the people at...

ESSA (Earthfriendly and Self Sufficient Architecture)

hosted by CSF (Communications for a Sustainable Future)?

essa (AT) csf (DOT) colorado.edu

listproc (AT) csf (DOT) colorado.edu

as the above may just be LISTSERVEs, try browsing at:

http://csf.colorado.edu/essa

Or contact the list's owners at:

marce1013 (AT) worldnet (DOT) att.net

I've not been a member of this conference for long, and

it's mostly strawbale/earthships at present, but there is

the occassional reference about caves. Some of the people

on this list are very experienced and may be able to advise

or at least point you in the right direction. Let me know

if they were able to help.

This looks very good -- and full of a zillion different letters.

I think I'll have my son sort through it all. Thanks very much. It looks

like it would be an excellent site for all our builders.
