The following tiny story, which appeared on page 23 of the New York

Times (May 25, 1999) fuels my longstanding suspicion that the New York

Times has made an editorial decision to play down the hazards of Y2K as

much as possible:

OIL INDUSTRY NOT READY FOR 2000, REPORT SAYS

WASHINGTON, May 24 (AP) -- The oil and gas industry has too many

questions marks about its plans to deal with year 2000 computer

problems, a Congressional report concludes.

The report, by the General Accounting Office, said that although

individual companies were confronting possible problems there was still

no national approach to deal with shortages or disruptions in the

nation's oil and gas supplies if computers read the "00" in 2000 as

1900.

Citing an industry survey taken in February, the accounting office said

more than a quarter of the industry did not expect to be ready for the

change to 200 until the second half of 1999, "leaving little time for

resolving unexpected problems."

Juan Palomo, a spokesman for the American Petroleum Institute, said the

industry had taken extensive steps to fix computers and had backups for

every system.

Very good, Mr. Palomo, that's exactly what I would have said if my job

was on the line. I'll bet you are one hell of a poker player, too!

[The GAO is the investigative arm of Congress charged with examining

matters relating to the receipt and payment of public funds. I

visited the GAO website at http://www.gao.gov/ but unfortunately I

could not figure out how to find the testimony that the New York Times

referred to.]
