Srila Prabhupada wrote books and made it such an "absolute priority during his lila here" because that was his specific mission deputed to him by his Guru Maharaja and Lord Caitanya. *Our* specific mission is to understand and APPLY what is in those books -- yes, including but not limited to implementing varnasrama-dharma. Some words to the wise: "Book knowledge without realization of the absolute is useless." (BG purpt) "HEARING and DISCUSSING [from the person Bhagavata] is more important than READING." (SB 1st Canto purpt) As far as being complacent to "simply read SP's books," in those very books Janesvara Prabhu speaks of, Prabhupada over and over again emphasizes the importance of associating with and learning from advanced devotees -- sadhu-sanga. Let's not make a false dogma of the statement "Everything is in Srila Prabhupada's books," by a one-sided and small-minded understanding of what is in those books.
