Guest guest Posted July 21, 1999 Report Share Posted July 21, 1999 Southern Russian region allows polygamy By Associated Press, 07/20/99 15:51 MOSCOW (AP) The head of a predominantly Muslim region in southern Russia on Tuesday decreed that men can take up to four wives, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported. Ruslan Aushev, the president of Ingushetia, also called on Russia's lower house of parliament, the State Duma, to amend the national family code to allow polygamy in the region. According to the decree, polygamy is necessary because ''of the demographic situation in the republic and to protect people's rights and legal interests.''
