I do not see Simple Living and High Thinking as "going back", I se it as going forward. We become blind to this fact when we are mired in the modern civilization of technology-dependency. Regular breaks from it to visit the country and forests develops finer tissues of the brain which in turn enlighten us. > the aborted project > of trying to live a virtuous life on the farm without first instilling social > values and sensitive human connections. We tend to make things more complicated than necessary. We think we should only "do" varnasrama-dharma if we can do it "perfectly". We don't do anything perfectly so we just end up on the mental platform thinking "if only...". Varnasrama-dharma can be started immediately by us crude pioneers - that's the idea! "Ultimately the aim of varnasrama-dharma is to turn a crude man into a pure devotee of the Lord, or a Vaisnava." SB 1.2.2 We don't first become pure and spiritually advanced THEN take up varnasrama-dharma. It's the other way around. yfs, Jd
