One may question how one has the free will to control the senses, but this is the external manifestation (or proof) of exercising one's free choice to-or-away-from Krishna correctly. In Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says "For one who has conquered the mind, supersoul is already reached", so Lord Krishna supports your statement.
