What is the pramAna ? The primary pramAna for definitions in the English language is the Oxford English Dictionary, and it does not concur. It's first definition is "Of or pertaining to the origin, beginning, or earliest stage of something; that belonged at the beginning to the person or thing in question; that existed at first, or has existed from the first; primary, primitive; innate; initial, first, earliest." The definition corresponding to "innate" is actually how the term was used first in this language -- to refer to the "original sin," which refers to the "innate depravity, corruption, or evil tendency of man's nature" asserted in biblical mythology. > As for the Indian example, the original home of his ancestors would be a more > apt description with regards to his connection with the land of India. Again from OED, this time for "origin" : "In reference to a person: The fact of springing from some particular ancestor or race; descent, extraction, parentage, ancestry." Thus, "original home of his ancestors" would be superfluous. Yours, Vijay
