If the man is > third-class, the woman is third -class....Because woman is meant for > assisting man, so the woman becomes suitable according to the man, her > husband." (Chicago, July 9, 1975) > This quote doesn't prove anything that a womans varna is determend by husband's. Rather the system is that one always makes arrangments that people of the same varna get married. Brahmana boy gets married to a brahmani girl, or a girl from brahmana family, ksatriya marries a ksatriya girl etc. This arrangment is done beforehand by the parents. This system is still very much strong in India. There are thousands of castes and when a marriage is arranged it is always that persons from the same caste get married. In the rare cases this rule is broken and then we have examples of pratiloma and anuloma marriages. It is important to understand this, otherwise if you think that a girl automatically gets a varna of her husband you will end up with anuloma and pratiloma marriages which are not desirable. This kind of marriages are not desirable, because the varna is geting lost. By mixing varnas we don't get that qualified children like from marriages of people which belong to the same varna. Varna is kept by education, training, and by breeding (arranging of proper marriages). In the kali-yuga varnasrama system is lost and we are all comming from the families with completely mixt-up background. Therefore we are all born as sudras (actually, less than sudra) but by education and training we can elevate ourselves. That's why Srila Prabhupada wonted those varnasrama-colleges, to train varna. Besides that it is important that people of like qualities get married, and in that way gradually we can get to the point of having dinasties of different varnas. Now we are at the point that everybody comes from the mixt-up background and there is no real training to develop certain varna. Ys.
