<< As I remember it, the contract with MacMillan was they either had to keep

reprinting or lose the rights to reprint. It had nothing to do with

revisions.

They originally printed the abridged lavendar version more as a test version.

I also remember a similar scenario, Srila Prabhupada planned this as a way to

get the rights back from MacMillan. MacMillan would not consider giving up

the rights stating that the devotees would always sell the books so it was

too profitable not to keep them. It appeared that MacMillan was cheating

Srila Prabhupada and a method was devised to rescue the Gita. I have always

thought it was Srila Prabhpada's plan but someone better placed than I may

know differently. Anyway at that time, the devotees did not distribute the

MacMillan Gita but did eventually ask for a small quantity of books that was

larger than what MacMillan had in stock but not enough to make a printing

worthwhile. MacMillan could not provide the books without printing many.

After some time they had to give up the rights because they could not provide

the small quantity requested so the contract was void and the Gita was

rescued from the infidels. It was very difficult to get the unabridged Gita

for some time ( a few years anyway) and that was the explanation at the time.

This is just plain good business strategy. But it can also be viewed as a

religious victory, using just plain good business strategy.
