In Garuda Purana 3.12.82-83 (Board of Scholars lead by J.L. Shastri, [Ancient Indian Tradition and Mythology 12-14,] Delhi: Motilal Banarsidass, 1982), Brahma-vaivarta Purana 6.181 and possibly elsewhere it says that Duryodhana is a partial expansion of Kali purusa. As for Sri Balarama's siding with him: Balarama is acintya. Full of apparent contradictions. Same as Sri Siva who is His remote expansion. By Lord Balarama's grace, I got nice prayer and kavaca of Lord Baladeva. They are from Garga-samhita, spoken by Pradvipaka Muni in reply to Duryodhana's requests. So the answer to above question might be that Duryodhana got mercy from Pradvipaka Muni, and then Lord Baladeva's favor as result of chanting these prayers to Lord Baladeva...
