First you have lovely things like this: 145. The teacher (akarya) is ten times more venerable than a sub-teacher (upadhyaya), the father a hundred times more than the teacher, but the mother a thousand times more than the father. then you have scary things like this: 371. If a wife, proud of the greatness of her relatives or (her own) excellence, violates the duty which she owes to her lord, the king shall cause her to be devoured by dogs in a place frequented by many. Eeeesh! For every verse that says great things about women, there are others that women strongly oppose. Srila Prabhupada definitely considered it in a very high regard, and refers to it often. I had just posted the suggestion (from my guru) that we give the most importance to the verses that Srila Prabhupada specifically refers to in the books (SB, BG, etc.) from the Manu Samhita. The others are probably not as practical, because he didn't mention them specifically. Not that they aren't important, but that they might not be appropriate right now. >From what I have seen a lot more people say we should not look to this book, than those who say we should. There is also the quote somewhere about if we even approach it we will become mlechas. Must be too potent for us... Heavy stuff. :-) The Manu Samhita is one of the most far out things I have read in my life. Interesting to know that at one time it was followed! your servant, Jayasri devi dasi
