Guest guest
It is to be understood that all the dv…pas, or islands, are surrounded by different types of oceans, and it is said herein that the breadth of each ocean is the same as that of the island it surrounds. The length of the oceans, however, cannot equal the length of the islands. According to V…rar€ghava šc€rya, the breadth of the first island is 100,000 yojanas. One yojana equals eight miles, and therefore the breadth of the first island is calculated to be 800,000 miles. The water surrounding it must have the same breadth, but its length must be different. Purport SB 5.1.33 What exactly does it that it's length must be different. with my little understanding of islands surrounded by water, it seems that the water to be surrounding the island must be circular or oval i.e. spherical and length would imply that it is quadrangular. How is this when this water is surrounded by another island which is surrounded by another ocean and so on for 7 islands and 7 oceans(The translation to this verse explains how the 7 islands and oceans surround each other). Are we speaking here of quadrangular islands surrounded by quadrangular oceans???? Any comments please:.........
