Well, I tried to make little research in the laws of Manu, so

here is my opinion. Sudras can serve to Ksatryas, without

doubts:

121. If a Sudra, (unable to subsist by serving Brahmanas,)

seeks a livelihood, he may serve Kshatriyas, or he may also seek

to maintain himself by attending on a wealthy Vaisya.

122. But let a (Sudra) serve Brahmanas, either for the sake

of heaven, or with a view to both (this life and the next); for

he who is called the servant of a Brahmana thereby gains all his

ends.

But from another part of laws, it's clear that their was not

military. They could clean weapons of their master, repair his

suit, bring water for him, etc., but no one sudra was allowed to

carry weapons or arms and to participate in fights. This part of

job was entirely given to ksatriyas and king. Of course, as we

know from many stories, there were also hunters and robbers, who

also carried weapons, but they were outcasted and anyway they

never participated in military activities. In the laws of Manu

all the soldiers and warriors were refered as ksatriyas, and it

was expected from them to follow the code of ksatriyas. Most

important thing, which was expected from ksatryas, is to bestow

protection, and sudras simply unqualified to do it, their motto

was different, so they don't fit in fightings.

In our present time, every strong man is able to fight, but not

everyone will like to live in military campus and strickly

follow military etiquette.
