It is not given as as a direct translation. The implication here is that one on the path of raganuga should always be in the anugatya (guidance) of raganuga- or ragatmika-jana, those whose atma is filled with devotion, or those who follow closely in their footsteps. This is a prominent lesson in the Raga Vartma Candrika. In his commentary to the eight verse of Sri Upadesamrta, Radha-ramana Gosvami, its original commentator, writes: "The meaning of tad-anuragi jananugami is to follow the intimate, eternal devotees in Sri Krsna's vraja-lila. One should cultivate krsna-bhakti under the guidance of those rasika gurus who are themselves followers of the intimate eternal devotees of Sri Vrajendra-nandana, who enacts human-like pastimes." Moreover, in the Caitanya Caritamrta (Madhya 22.83), the following statement is given: krsna-bhakti-janma-mula haya sadhu-sanga krsna-prema janme, tenho punar mukhya-anga "The root cause of Krsna-bhakti is association with advanced devotees. Even when krsna-prema awakens, association with devotees still remains the chief principle." Moreover, Srila Rupa Gosvamipada defines sadhu-sanga in his Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (1.2.91) in the following words: sajatiyasaye snigdhe sadhau sangah svato vare "One should associate with the devotees who are more advanced than oneself, who are soft-hearted and affectionately disposed towards oneself, and who are endowed with a similar type of affection for the Lord." Thus the following conclusion is reached: If one is not fully mature, and he comes into a situation where he is deprived of highly advanced association (whether diksa- or siksa-guru), it is obligatory for him to seek the guidance of advanced Vaisnavas in order to progress smoothly on the path of devotion.
