In ch 23 of that book, Bhag. 6.13.31 purport is quoted in which Prabhupada writes; "[in the Vedic culture] The purpose of marrying is to beget a son, because a son is necessary to deliver his father and forefathers from any hellish conditional lives in which they may be...Such help rendered to forefathers is a family tradition and those who are not in devotional life are required to perform such rituals." Then Satsvarupa Maharaja writes: "Prabhupada did not apply this to devotees.....When Srila Prabhupada performed my marriage in 1968, I wrote to him asking how to go about having children. He told me that I shouldn't think I had to have sex just because I was married. He said that if we could avoid sex, that would be better. Later, I wrote him again and asked whether we could have children. My wife was sickly, so Prabhupada told me that it would be better we avoided it. He said better to become children ourselves than have our own children. "You become children of Krsna directly"(letter Oct. 9. 1968). "He didn't indicate that if we didn't have children, we should cancel our marriage, but he has taught that sex life without children is a result of degredation. Such a marriage is void. This is not the same as a couple staying together to perform devotional service, despite the fact that they don't want or cannot have children." "As with so many of these slokas, there is a transcendendal aspect which Chanakya doesn't address." I have heard also that Srila Gour Govinda Maharaja, who himself had seven children, said some words to the effect that an advantage in having a marriage with children is that one gets a nice beating from the material energy from which comes plenty of impetus to surrender to the all merciful Lord Krsna!
