Editorial ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Maharajas and prabhus, Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. We would first like to thank everyone for the many responses we received to our first online newsletter. We really appreciated hearing how devotees from many parts of the world welcomed an increased understanding about BBT activities. It was also very satisfying to be of service to those devotees who responded to our request for artists, translators etc., by connecting them with the appropriate BBT division. This issue brings you up-to-date news about the positive developments in the BBT-Hansaduta court case and the Russian BBT. There is information about new publications including a book that takes you on a fascinating photographic journey to many Vaishnava places of pilgrimage. We also hear from Aisvarya Dasa about his summer travels. Our good wishes go to all those devotees around the world who endeavour to distribute Srila Prabhupada's books. This newsletter aims to give devotees a picture of how the BBT operates, so each edition will contain stories about a particular BBT division or a particular aspect of BBT work. Our second newsletter focuses on the work of the Northern European BBT (NE-BBT), which is at the forefront of translating and producing Srila Prabhupada's books in new languages. This is an exciting area for preaching, and learning about these processes is a vital part of understanding how the BBT works. This edition includes a selection of the letters that were sent to us. Please do continue to send us your news and views as your feedback confirms for us how important it is to have open lines of communication in Srila Prabhupada's family. Your humble servant, Anjana Dasi ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. BBT-Hansaduta Court Case Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The following joint announcement has just been released by Jayadvaita Swami and Gupta Dasa: BBT LEGAL CASE ENDS. Devotees settle their differences and pledge cooperation. "Now all my disciples must work combinedly and with cooperation to spread this Sankirtan Movement. If you cannot work together then my work is stopped up. Our Society is like one big family and our relationships should be based on love and trust. We must give up the fighting spirit and use our intelligence to push ahead." (Letter from Srila Prabhupada to Upendra Prabhu, dated 6 August 1970) Hare Krishna. All Glories to Srila Prabhupada. All Glories to Lord Nityananda and Lord Caitanya. The BBTI-Hansadutta court case is over. By the grace of Krishna, the devotees involved were able to settle the matter without need of a trial. On November 13, the devotees appeared before the judge and placed their settlement on record, thus putting their legal dispute to an end. In dispute had been several issues: Is the original American BBT trust, founded by Srila Prabhupada in 1972, still valid? Is it the true owner of the copyrights to Srila Prabhupada's literary works? And was Hansadutta Dasa still rightfully entitled to serve as a trustee? After some eighteen months of researching, analyzing and litigating the matter as adversaries, the devotees began to see clearly that to reach a final and lasting resolution, we had to shift from adversarial positioning to spiritual cooperation. Accordingly, after several weeks of intense negotiations, we reached an agreement meant to satisfy our various concerns. It was this agreement that was then officially accepted by the court. The agreement reaffirms the validity of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust formed by Srila Prabhupada on May 29, 1972. This was a legal California trust into which Srila Prabhupada conveyed the copyrights to his books. All sides agree that this trust is still legal and alive, and that it is the true owner of Srila Prabhupada's copyrights, as Srila Prabhupada desired. This was an outcome upon which all the devotees, in a spirit of cooperation, submitted their willingness to agree. Now all sides are pleased to see Srila Prabhupada's copyrights secure within this original trust. Hansadutta Dasa, Veda Guhya Dasa, Bhagavan Dasa, and Dasa Dasanudasa Dasa Dasi have voluntarily stepped down from any role they might have had as trustees of the 1972 trust. And all concerned have agreed that now the trustees will be four trustees from the BBT International: Brahma Muhurta Dasa, Naresvara Dasa, Svavasa Dasa, and Jayadvaita Swami. All parties agree that the rightful beneficiary of the trust is the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, founded by Srila Prabhupada in 1966 and further defined by the GBC. (The "beneficiary" is the person or organization that a trust is supposed to benefit. So, for example, when the BBT allots funds for constructing temples, they are to be used for the benefit of ISKCON.) With the validity of the California trust now reaffirmed, what about the BBTI? Is it redundant? Is it useful? Is it needed at all? It's too soon to say. For now, the 1972 BBT trust will serve mainly as the safe shelter for Srila Prabhupada's copyrights. And on its behalf the BBT International will continue handling the active side of BBT operations. Meanwhile, devotee attorneys who opposed one another in the case will work together to study how best to take advantage of the two legal units--the BBT and the BBTI--to serve Srila Prabhupada's desires. Gupta Dasa (who served as the attorney on Hansadutta's side of the case) will work on this with Amarendra Dasa (who served on the ISKCON side). Another part of the settlement is a liberal licensing arrangement that allows for cooperative publishing. Under this arrangement, Hansadutta Prabhu and the devotees working with him will form a company that can publish Srila Prabhupada's books in the editions published before 1978. These will be available for sale in markets where they won't directly compete with distribution by the BBT and by ISKCON temples. The theme is "cooperation, not competition." The new company may also buy books from the BBT, or vice versa. Or the two may work together on joint projects. Finally, in recognition of the strong legal claims and defenses presented by Hansadutta's side in the case (both in America and in Singapore, where the matter first started), the BBTI will reimburse Hansadutta, and the devotees who supported him, for their attorney's fees and costs. Clearly, the devotees involved in this case were able to settle their differences only by treating one another respectfully, as spirit souls, servants of Srila Prabhupada. They had to focus together on strengthening and expanding--rather than weakening and limiting--the Krishna consciousness movement. The resolution of this lawsuit, a case full of emotionally and spiritually charged issues, called for a great deal of personal, emotional and spiritual healing between the devotees involved. We hope that the spirit and example of this unique resolution can now become a model for resolving other controversies affecting the Hare Krsna movement and its devotees. We're all servants of Srila Prabhupada and Krishna, and we're all meant to work cooperatively in their service. Case closed, with pleasure. Hare Krishna. Jayadvaita Swami and Gupta Dasa With the agreement of all the devotees directly involved: Akruranatha Dasa, Amarendra Dasa, Bhagavan Dasa, Bhima Dasa (from Singapore), Brahma Muhurta Dasa, Dasa Dasanudasa Dasa Dasi, Gopal Krishna Goswami, Gupta Dasa, Hansadutta Dasa, Madhusevita Dasa, Naresvara Dasa, Svavasa Dasa, Veda Guhya Dasa. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3. Russian BBT Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Moscow BBT is up and running again under new management. Aniruddha Dasa, who has served in the BBT for many years and managed the Sochi centre for several years, has taken on the additional service of general manager of the Moscow BBT. He is ably assisted by Dharmarupa Dasa who is also a long time servant of the Moscow BBT. Dharmarupa Dasa is now in charge of printing new titles. The Russian BBT was seriously affected by the departure of Sannyas Dasa, along with most of the staff, and a major part of the book stock. Dharmarupa is trying to secure as many of the existing books as possible so that they can be distributed by the sankirtan devotees in Russia and other CIS countries. As the economic situation in Russia is critical, the BBT has made the important concession of price adjustment so that the devotees there can continue distributing Srila Prabhupada's books. At present in Russia the government does not have money and therefore does not pay wages. Factories are closing because they cannot purchase new materials, and the ruble is continuing to decrease in its value against foreign currencies while most goods are price in US dollars. However, early reports from book distributors indicate that book distribution is picking up again. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. An Interview with Govinda Madhava Dasa of the NE-BBT ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our first article is an interview with Govinda Madhava Dasa, who has been with the NE-BBT since 1980. Q: The NE-BBT is publishing books in 44 languages. Can you tell us how you manage production in so many languages? GMD: Back in 1988 we were only printing books in a handful of languages, but as soon as the Eastern Bloc opened up, production started to flourish in many more languages. Korsnas Gard started to expand with visiting translators and editors. In 1993 we produced as many as 93 new titles. Although this time was blissful, after some years we realized that we had to pay more attention to the quality of our production. In 1995 we introduced BBT seminars and manuals. In 1996 Gaura-vigraha Dasi became a second production manager and gradually took over management of half of the languages. Q: How are your translators and editors working? GMD: We used to have all the steps of the production at our BBT center in Sweden. Everyone would work here. Translators had to type in everything themselves. There were no prepared files with Sanskrit texts, indexes, etc. In 1989 we started our COM conferences where translators can get help in translation questions, errors in English books, errors in Non-English books, etc. The questions and answers from these conferences are sorted and are available in the form of files for all BBT translators. COM has helped a lot to improve BBT communications, so nowadays most translators and editors work in their home countries. In fact it is possible to translate and completely finalize a book at home. Our translators are translating on computers, using 'Ð shells' where all Sanskrit verses, word-by-word sections, and indexes, etc. are already typed in. The Devanagari texts are merged automatically. Ramakanta Dasa has helped us to create our own text processing, hyphenation and layout programs. We also have fonts for all the languages. Today in Korsnas we provide the last steps of production: typesetting, film making, and digital design. Q: The NE-BBT is the only BBT division with its own typesetting, design and repro departments. How is this organized? GMD: The production manager is crucial as he interfaces between the different departments. After the proof-reader and the production manager have signed the final printouts, the book is typeset on photo paper. Then films are made on a duplicating machine. The paper originals are kept in storage, the films are sent to the printer, together with printing instructions, which tell the printer how to mount each page and where the blank pages are. A similar process is applied for picture sections and covers, which are all designed digitally. From the printer we get blueprints. Only when everything is approved can the printer start with the binding. It is sometimes difficult to interface between so many persons, as there are many opportunities for mistakes to happen, so there has to be cooperation between all these departments and the printers. Good cooperation is the ABC in book production. Thank you, Govinda Madhava Dasa. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. Development and Progress in the NE-BBT by Gaura-vigraha Dasi ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Over the years we have initiated a strong move toward various forms of education for devotees working with the NE-BBT. We have learnt from our experience that we cannot present Srila Prabhupada's books properly unless we train our translators. To improve the skills of the BBT translators, editors and proof-readers, we published a book called The BBT Manual for Translators, Editors and Proof Readers in 1996. This was the first volume of a series of educational literature under the label The BBT Book Production Series. The BBT Manual offers basic knowledge about the system of language and provides practical guidelines for translating Srila Prabhupada's books by suggesting solutions for typical translation problems. It also views the processes of editing and proof reading and teaches the basics of book production. The BBT Manual is now being revised and enlarged. Last autumn we published another volume in the Book Production series titled Readings in General Translation Theory. This helps our devotee translators to gain a proper perspective on the activity they perform. This book is a collection of articles by leading translators and linguists of our century. It gives BBT translators a theoretical understanding about principal approaches to translation and broadens the range of their information of language. Another title in the series will be The Bhagavad-gita Translation Guide. Last year in Moscow we organized a three-month course for BBT translators. Leading professional translators and editors, professors from renowned Moscow universities and specialists in English and Russian stylistics gave lectures to the devotees. During the seminars, the Russian production was almost suspended. However, within a period of one year after resuming production, fourteen new titles were produced in Russian, and another ten titles are now in production. The quality of the translations improved and the devotees feel more confident in their work. At the BBT center in Sochi, Russia, we organized an English course for devotees who are translating into CIS languages and the languages of Central Asia. For six months our translators studied English under the guidance of Lalita-kunda Dasi. Every week the schedule included three two-hour lessons taught in a specially equipped classroom. Previously we translated into these languages from Russian, now Srila Prabhupada's books will be translated into these languages directly from English. Last February we held a seminar for translators in Germany. In March, a ten-day workshop for translators, editors and proof-readers of the NE-BBT was organized in our production center at Korsnas Gard, Sweden. In July I visited Slovenia and gave a five-day seminar on translation and proof-reading to young BBT devotees from Ljubljana. In September we will hold a seminar on proof-reading in Denmark. Now we are preparing a curriculum for training BBT devotees. Apart from seminars on translation, editing and proof reading, we have also included seminars on production management, text design, typography and typesetting. Our experience shows that cooperation with professional translators and editors yields best results when our devotee translators get training from them and gradually become professional themselves. The most effective way to use professionals is as teachers, and not just to engage them in direct production. At the moment professionals are helping our translation work in Azerbaijani, Croatian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Slovene and Uzbekh languages. We want to raise the quality of our publications and gradually establish the BBT as an esteemed institution for Vaisnava translations. If we can attract specialists in the field of linguistics and theology to our mission, Srila Prabhupada's glories will spread even wider. Our great advantage is that we are working with many languages. Besides the United Bible Societies, there is hardly any institution that translates scriptures into so many languages. New Books from the NE-BBT ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Srimad-Bhagavatam ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In 1997 the NE-BBT started production of a three-volume edition of Srimad-Bhagavatam in English. High readability has been the major consideration in the text design with a type size of 9.8 points. The traditional Srimad-Bhagavatam format with Devanagari script and indexes, will be kept. Each volume will have about 1600 pages. The large book block allows printing of up to four pictures per page, so all the good-quality paintings of the previous Bhagavatam editions will be included. In addition there will be a number of paintings recently done for the Russian Srimad-Bhagavatam series. Brihad-bhagavatamrta ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Brihad-bhagavatamrta was originally written in Sanskrit, and Gopiparanadhana Dasa is now translating it into English. The BBT edition will feature the Devanagari verses, Roman transliterations, word-by-word and verse translations, plus purports by Srila Sanatana Goswami. The purports are translated and further explained by Gopiparanadhana Dasa. The Hidden Glory of India ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 'The Hidden Glory of India' is the tentative title of a book by Satyaraja Dasa (Stephen J. Rosen) and his wife Vrnda Devi Dasi (Barbara Berasi-Rosen). The book, which they are respectively writing and designing, uses extensive photography and state-of-the-art graphic design techniques to take the reader on a journey to many Vaishnava places of pilgrimage in India. Placing Vaishavism in perspective to both the modern world and India's past, the book focuses on the values of Vaishnava tradition today. All the major holy places are explored along with other sites directly related to the pastimes of Radha-Krishna and Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Other topics covered include Guru, the Acaryas, Srila Prabhupada, music, dance and vegetarianism. There are colourful pictures and informative text accompanying each section. The aim of the book is to introduce people to Krishna Consciousness and ISKCON in a cultured way drawing upon the depth of the tradition and its time-honoured connection to ancient India. Error Files ~~~~~~~~~~~ The BBT have collected error files over the years, and can now fix many typos and other reported mistakes. Any Bhagavatam reader who has his own collection of errors is welcome to share it with the BBT. Please contact: errors.english.books (AT) com (DOT) bbt.se. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. New BBT Art ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ At the BBT center in Sochi, Russia, five devotee artists are producing new artwork for Srila Prabhupada's books. They have painted five new illustrations for the Krishna Book, nine for Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 4, twenty-three for Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 5, and eight for Canto 6. By autumn of 1998, they will finish all the new paintings for the remaining Cantos of Srimad-Bhagavatam. In Lithuania, Devaki Dasi is painting illustrations for a one-volume deluxe English edition of Krishna Book. Altogether there will be 90 illustrations in the book, and more than half of them are already completed. The book is scheduled for Gaura-Purnima 2000. The artists working at Sochi are Rasikananda Dasa, Mukunda-Murari Dasa, Dina-bandeau Dasa, Aniruddha Dasa, Vajrakhya Dasi and Sundaragi Dasi. Archive Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All films with footage of Srila Prabhupada have been scanned with a top-notch film scanner and stored in the new Digital Betacam format. In July Ranjit Dasa, who runs the Archives in America, visited the NE-BBT. Together with Tridhama Dasa, the NE-BBT scanning operator, he has scanned 2000 more pictures on a Linotype drum scanner. These images are now stored on CD's in several places. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 8. Aisvarya's Travelling Sankirtan Diary ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Although we are not all able to go out on a daily basis and spread Krishna consciousness by distributing Srila Prabhupada's books, reading about the activities of those who do is very pleasing to the heart. Here are some more extracts from the diary of Aisvarya Dasa, a travelling sankirtan devotee in America. {which we hope you will find enlivening reading.) THURSDAY: We arrived in Helena, the capital of Montana and saw the outline of the local Wal Mart looming over the horizon and we silently slipped into the parking lot. Jananivas was the first to spot him. The man with the Stetson hat stepped out of his old Ford truck, cocked his pistol, tucked it into his belt (behind the large shiny buckle), and walked into the store. It was a dangerous one but I was compelled to take the risk. It didn't take long before he emerged from his waltz along the Wal Mart aisles. I quickly grabbed three books and ran over to him. It turned out that Rob works in the local gold mine, which is better pay than the ranches he used to work on. He was making his weekly trip to the big city to do some shopping. As we conversed he asked me to wait a second as he placed his old faithful 45 calibre semi-automatic on the front of the truck. He then slapped his back pocket, pulled out his wallet, told me he had just been paid himself paid, gave me twenty dollars and drove off with three gold nuggets of unparalleled quality. FRIDAY: This morning we tried to distribute at the University of Utah for a final time. We can now leave fully satisfied that we've done our best to saturate the place with Srila Prabhu- pada's books. We met many old friends from our past few days here. Eric, Robert's room-mate, who came to the Temple on Sunday, tells us that three of his co-workers in the Student Newspaper have Bhagavad-gitas on their desks and another one has a SSR. Eric is this week's editor at the newspaper. He showed us the pictures he's thinking of using for his photo essay which will be published soon. The photo essay is on his trip to the Temple. He's going to send a copy to San Diego for us. They (Robert and Eric) came to the Visitors Lot for a final prasadam feast before we left. SATURDAY: We're having to speed up our journey in order to catch the schools before they go into finals week. So on Saturday morning we got to Billings. I had to send e-mail so I found the "Cafe @ broadway. com" who let me use one of their phone lines. Shaw is at High School but works at the Café and he showed a big interest in monks as we looked for the phone jack. By the time the computer had booted up I was explaining our journey across the Western States. When dialing we were discussing the transcendental art of book distribution. While sending/receiving mail he mentioned how much he would like to do what we are doing. As I was shutting down the computer I asked him to come out and see the van. He came, I introduced him to the assembled Vaisnavas, was about to give him an "Easy Journey to Other Planets" when he saw a Quest for Enlightenment, whipped out five dollars and downloaded it. He eagerly gave me his address and e-mail and told us the best places to distribute in town. I'm writing this while driving through Downey, Idaho (pop 620) and heading north past Pocatello. At times like this I wonder what Lord Krishna has in store for us. Begging to become your servant Aisvarya das ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 9. Your Letters ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We would like to thank all of those devotees who wrote to us and offer our humble apologies if we did not respond to everyone.
