All glories to Srila Prabhupada. There is, perhaps, another perspective of this debacle. That being that perhaps the problem is that the Vedabase is too expensive. And before you judge me for that statement, I say further the reason it has to be so expensive, according to Ekanath Prabhu, who stayed with me in my room in New York for about three days and with whom I spoke many times over that period, is that the BBT is not giving enough funding to the Archives, and gradually cutting back more and more funds. It is as if, according to the Archive devotees, the Archives is thought to be a separate project, almost irrelevant, and not worth funding anymore. Because of that, the devotees in the Archives struggle to survive by selling products, but gradually as the Vedabase is sold for too high a price, and others bootleg it because of that high price, and also because this is their only big selling item, and there is a somewhat limited customer base, it is a recipe for a business disaster in the long run. No company can run like that in the long run and survive. It's doomed. Too few products, too high a price, limited customer buying base. The solution, according to my take of Ekanath's view, is that the BBT should provide adequate funding so that the archives is not dependent upon the sale of items that almost every devotee with a computer already has and which they obviously won't buy again. In fact, the latest upgrade to the Vedabase which you and I are testing is so clunky with security issues eating all the available RAM and CPU time that revenues due to new sales are likely to be small. I don't plan to buy the new one. It's just not worth it. I have the old one and it runs better. But because there seems to be an attitude in the BBT, at least according to hearsay from Ekanath and Ranjit, that the archives is obsolete (after all someone may think we already have Prabhupada's books in digital format, and his lectures, why preserve the originals) funding is being cut back more and more each year. And now there is a crises. So I don't think the problem is that people are bootlegging the Vedabase. The bootlegged version of the Vedabase I saw is an old version that is buggy and crashes and has no functioning internal links. The problem is that the Vedabase costs too much and cannot survive at that price, and the reason the Archives is forced to keep it at that price, thus spelling their own doom, is because their BBT funding is being dried up, and these fine Archive devotees are struggling to preserve Srila Prabhupada's legacy somehow or other by entrepreneur activities which aren't going well lately. Therefore, the real problem, as I see it, is with the BBT trustees and their management and attitude toward the BBT archives. In there also lies the solution. Guest guest
Dear Vipramukhya Swami, Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to our ever well-wisher Srila Prabhupada. Thank you very much for your email. I have read your email below regarding the Archives financial situation and beta testing of the Bhaktivedanta VedaBase. Thank you very much for your encouragement regarding funding the preservation work of the Bhaktivedanta Archives. I have also noted your comment, "In fact, the latest upgrade to the VedaBase which you and I are testing is so clunky with security issues eating all the available RAM and CPU time that revenues due to new sales are likely to be small. I don't plan to buy the new one. It's just not worth it. I have the old one and it runs better." Please note you are testing a beta version and not a final product and therefore your comment about "latest upgrade", "so clunky", "I don't plan to buy the new one. It's just not worth it" would seem premature in light of you testing the first beta version. Please remember your comments no matter how truthful at the time could and would influence others especially coming from someone as respectable as you and therefore only add to our funding problems, when in fact the final product after "beta testing" will be faster and contain much more information, like all BTG magazines, Brihad Bhagavatamrta etc, than now. I trust that you will understand my comments in this regard while the beta testing is continuing. I hope this meets you well and in blissful spirits. Guest guest
Haribol Ekanatha Prabhu, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. Actually, I know that, too! Here's how I responded to Nityananda Ram recently: Dear Nityananada Ram Prabhu, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. While I agree the product is something I would probably not opt to install on my computer, it is, after all, still a beta version, and I think we should work with them. Beta versions are not usually commercially viable yet, are they? Of course, you're the software expert, being the head of a software company. Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada, Vipramukhya Swami His original email message was as follows: My first Beta report. I am using the current updated Beta version on 500Mhz P3, 767Mb memory, Windows 2000 computer that is located within my software company. There are very few bugs within the Beta application that cannot be easily fixed during the Beta phase. I find that the current Beta version uses 1220K of Application Memory, 10,228K of Virtual Memory and the Beta application cycles the cpu in 1 second intervals consuming 18%-22% of the cpu while the application is inactive. The memory footprint is well within acceptable limits for commercial software. However, the resting rate of the application consuming an average 20% of cpu is wholly unacceptable and to senior staff members of our development team (20+ years corporate development experience each) completely unimaginable that any development team would propose making commercially available software with such ridiculous cpu consumption. I doubt if I will further test this Beta version until a satisfactory commercially viable Beta product is delivered to the Beta team. For the Archives to propose this Beta version, with it obvious poorly engineered cpu architecture, as market ready, it would hurt the already perilous financial condition of the Archives. That would not be in any ones best interest, except the bootleggers you seek to protect yourself from.
