Direct/indirect meaning of shruti-shastra

Dear devotees,

Dandavats.

I had a question: Lord Caitanya has said: mukhya-vRttye sei artha

parama mahattva: "To teach the Vedic literature according to its

direct meaning, without false commentary, is glorious." He has

discouraged gauNa-artha, or figurative interpretations.

But what about this quote from the Aitareya AraNyaka [2:4:3]:

parokSa-priyA iva hi devAH pratyakSa-dviSaH

"For the devas love the indirect mode of exposition and hate the

direct."

Was the above merely an ancient ruse to restrict Vedic knowledge to

eligible people? Does it apply to the UpaniSats? Which part of shruti

was Lord Caitanya referring to?

Thanks in advance,

Carl
