Although certain mechanical means of sense control, such as avoidance of the opposite sex or intellectual analysis by sankhya-yoga, are recommended in sastra, and may be helpful adjucts in the primary stages of devotional service, such extraneous methods cannot in and of themselves give rise to bhakti, which is the exclusive gift of Krsna and His devotees.
