The prescribed duties for devotees are different to the prescribed duties of general men and women. All the prescribed duties are supposed to be to please Krishna. When Srila Prabhupada asked to raise the standards in the society he meant to raise spiritual standards. Not the rubber stamp Asuric Varnasrama which has created havoc in India. Again there is nothing wrong if a woman can maitain a good spiritual standard, and at the same time earn for the family. Sumati Morarji is a great Vaisnavi. What is wrong in her heading a shipping company? During Srila Prabhupada's younger days, even the servant maids, living and working in his locality were devotees. Yes the servant maids were earning a lively hood, but because they were Krishna Conscious Srila Prabhupada calls them devotees. Janaka example is given, telling that he is a pure devotee of the Lord. He being a king, there was no one to check him, but he was performing all yajnas to please Lord Ramachandra and not engaging in sense gratification activities. Great men or Great women (kings, queens or servant maids) set great example for the common people to follow, by they themselves worshipping Lord Krishna or Vishnu. The old lady fruit seller who bartered fruits for a handful of grains was a merchant woman. What ever you are, serve Krishna, and that is what is everyone's prescribed duty. That is my understanding of Srila Prabhupada's teachings. We will still be following Srila Prabhupada, if we followed 4 regulative principles and chant 16 malas, and made a honest living, man or woman does not matter. Reestablishing Varnasrama Dharma means distribution of the Holy Names. As Varnasrama is a natural division and it is already exisiting, what is that we have to establish. What is missing is KC, which is what is the prescribed duty of all of us, spreading KC, or missinary activities of Sri Pancha Tattva, is the actual prescribed duty.
