Thanks to the Deenanath Prabhu from Vrindavan, a disciple of HH

Lokanatha Maharaja, who enquired from HH Bhakti Vikasa Maharaja, we are now

able to read these questions. But there are 10, not 12. I quote the letter I

got from him below. If somebody finds BSST's answers from "The Harmonist"

please feel free to enlighten us all.

In 1934 Gandhi composed a list of ten questions about untouchability

and sent it to many recognized scholars, including Sarasvati Thakura, whose

answers were published in the Harmonist. The questions were:

 

1. Define untouchability according to the sastras.

2. Can the definition of the untouchables given in the sastras be applied to

the so-called untouchables of the present day?

3. What are the restrictions imposed by the sastras on the untouchables?

4. Can an individual be free from untouchability in his own lifetime?

5. What are the injunctions of the sastras regarding the behavior of the

touchables toward the untouchables?

6. Under what circumstances will the sastras permit temple entry by

untouchables?

7. What are the sastras?

8. How is the authoritativeness of the sastras to be proved?

9. How are the differences arising over the definitions or interpretations

of the sastras to be decided?

10. What are your conclusions?
