DaNDavats Dear rasananda swami. Jaya Krishna BalarAma!

Please accept my respectful obeisances. All Glories to Sreela PrabhupAda..

Thank you for your letter.

I think Umapati swami, bhakti vidya purna swami, priti vardhana dasa, sri

prahlada das will all be able to give imput and answer even more then I've

attempted to do so. may they bless us all!

> Is it compulsory for brahmacaris, and sannyasis to wear kaupinas?

prABHupada evidentally thought so, otherwise why did he establish in early

Iskcon the wearing of them vis a vis karmi underwear?

> If so, why?

protects the celebacy by holding the private parts in a more complete way

then karmi underwear.

> Does de underwear fulfil the results of using kaupinas?

if one's skin between the buttocks is wearing/ scraping thin due to wearing

kaupinas, then use a gamcha folded around the waste to support the spot

where the knot is folded in the back of the kaupinas.

as a last resort if the pain is too much from scraped skin on the sides of

the body or between the buttocks, I've used karmi underwear but with the

kaupinas as well.

> What is the benefit of using kaupinas over underwear?

in sat kriya sara dipika, mantras are chanted over the sannyasi's kaupinas

offering them to Vishnu for protection of a sannyasa candidates celebacy.

there are no such mantras for karmi underwear.

> Is it a weird practice to use kaupina in the Western countries?

not in Iskcon in the 70's-80's. why change what Prabhupada gave us?

> What are the scientific benefit of wear kaupinas?

holds the genitals down in a more tighter beneficial way.

> Should we abandon the use of kaupinas?

never! I consider it a regulative part of male vaisnava dress.

If one wants to ask that question. perhaps they'll also ask- why should we

wear a sannyasi dhoti, uttariya, or carry a danda?

srila Prabhupada gave and expected male devotees to use kaupinas. even

paratrikananda dasa, me and many others remember the old days in 1972 when

we didn't have personal kaupinas but would wash them all together in one

machine at the laundrymat.
