Guest guest
Dear Visvarupa prabhu, Onions and Garlics are members of the Allium family - including also leeks, chives & shallots. Actually they are Rajarsic - they are foods in the mode of passion. Vaisnavas do not eat them because they are unfit to offer to Krishna. Strict Buddhists do not eat any of the Alliums for the same reason - they disturb meditation. In ancient Buddhist Tao writings, one sage (Tsang-Tsze) described that the Alliums are known as the "5 fragrant or spicy scented vegetables" that each have a detrimental effect on one of the following 5 organs - liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys, and heart. Tsag-Tsze said that these pungent vegetables contain five different kinds of enzymes which cause reactions of repulsive breath, extra-foul odour from perspiration and bowel movements, and lead to lewd indulgences, enhance agitations, anxieties and aggressiveness, especially when eaten raw.
