Where does the soul go to "wait" until > it's next body is ready? What is the state of consciousness of the > soul during this period? It is possible, but usually, when the next body is not ready, the present body does not die as in the case of people who are in coma for long periods of time. They are waiting for the next body to be ready. Also, people can be transferred to the subtle plane and wait there as well, but I have not heard this from scripture except in the case of Maharaj Nimi who refused to accept a gross body because he considered it obnoxious. So there is one case of a soul remaining on the subtle platform for some reason of his own. > Did the same happen to Jaya and Vijaya whose "incarnations" as > Ravana-Kumbakarna and Sisupala-Dantavakra were hundreds of thousands > of years apart? Where did they wait until their next appearance? I am not sure. But in these cases, where they are part of Krsna's pastimes, it is possible they just remained in some unmanifest state (this means they did not have consciousness of their waiting and just went from one body to another to fulfill the desires of the Lord). But this is only my idea.
