One has to go through various experiences in life. When one enters into one of the four categories of pious men, ie those looking for relief from their miseries, those looking for wealth, those who are curious and those who are looking for knowledge, then he starts his spiritual life if he is looking towards the Lord to satisfy those needs. After some time he realizes that simply by engaging in bhakti yoga, he can satisfy all his needs, and he starts his path of devotion. However, devotion is usually tinged with karma or jnana in the beginning and therefore the aspiring devotee has to gradually elevate himself higher and higher till he comes to the point of understanding real knowledge. At that point he becomes more and more advanced in knowledge until he comes to the point where he sees Vasudeva as everything.
