According to Bhaktivinode Thakur, the living entity who comes to the material world is always searching after the rasa or taste of the spiritual world which he left. This is because there is no higher taste than this. Unfortunately, he never finds the same taste and is always frustrated again and again in life after life. The living entity has to go through birth to death because of the influence of the material nature which he has surrendered to by coming to the material world. I suppose that one could make a connection between the desire to enjoy the rasas in the material world with the requirement to go through the various stages of life, but this is not a standard explanation given in the sastra and thus I would not want to state it as an absolute principle.
