The consciousness of the cook very much affects the quality of the foodstuff prepared. For example, when a sudra cooks, the quality of ignorance pervades the preparation. Therefore only a brahmana can cook since his consciousness is supposed to be in goodness. Also, one has to be second initiated to cook on the fire, whereas anyone can sew or make garlands. Neither does one's consciousness effect anyone else when one makes a garland or sews, therefore it is less important.
