I suggest that you get a copy of the Krsna bhavanamrta which explains that this can happen, and indeed did happen, even during the time of Lord Caitanya. It happens because the person was weak and was not really able to maintain the position he was in. It is very difficult to be a spiritual master, and therefore one should not jump into the position even if others are doing so. It is simply everyone's misfortune. We are all not qualified to be on the proper platform and therefore we suffer due to our faults and material desires. We should pray to Krsna to save us despite our difficulties.
