I think the most sane way to do it is to set is as a default BUT leave a user an option to enter the password in one of the options dialogs IF he selected that he is 'expert user', password should be visible so he will not be in illusion that none can see it if it is in asterisks. This option can be called: no one on the earth has direct access to my computer (and that is the case with me).
