Guest guest
All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Dear Nayana-Ranjana Prabhu, Please accept my humble obeisances. Perhaps we could promote the cause of brahmacarya more by being less critical of the frailties of either gender. Brahmacarya, after all, is for everyone: men and women from all ashramas. It is better, instead, to concentrate on the good attributes of Brahmacari(ni) life. To that end, please find a perspective on Brahmacarya from Dr. Sapna Bhargava (assistant to Dr. Pratapji on COM), below. >1) What health benefits does one get from brahmacarya? It is written in ashtag hardaya( ayurvedic book) "Bramchayra rati gramya sukh nisprishchatsa nidra santosh triptasya swam kaalam na ati vartaty." means one is interesed in restricted and proper sex, and one's heart is lipsa rahit( devoid of excessive sex urge ) and who is contented, who keeps patience on his sexual urge, he has always good and proper sleep . His intelligence, body power, age, happiness is always more than others. He has also delayed ageing. >2) After how much time of practice does one realise these benefits? Is it >immediate, or does one have to wait for many years? > In manu smriti , various stages are described through which the journey of life may pass. He prescribes four stages and the types of most suitable avocation which may then occupy the body and mind. The first period is brahmcharya. It is period of training and discipline of body and mind. It could last till age 25. After that sex is advised, but only for producing child. Excessive sex is restricted. But if you are practice brahmcharya, you should be pious and pure from mind also. If you are not obeying brahmcharya from mind and your body is retricted to obey it, it will harm you, detroys the ojus and so give weakness to your body. You will get its results in one or two years. >3) Are there are drawbacks in performing brahmacarya from the ayur-vedic >point of view? I don't think there are any, but still I am asking for the >sake of completeness. > Again I will say, But if you are practice brahmcharya, you should be pious and pure from mind also. If you are not obeying brahmcharya from mind and your body is retricted to obey it, it will harm you, detroys the ojus and so give weakness to your body. If you are following brahmcharya from mind and body, you have no side effects. >4) What are the characteristics (laksan) of one performing brahmacarya? It is written is in ashtag hardaya( ayurvedic book)- "Smartimedhayoarogyapushtiindryayoshobal Adhika mandajraso bhavantistisho sayanta" means who are contented in sex, or obey brahmcharya, they have more intellligence, long life, health and strength than others. They look younger also. They have lusturous skin and bright face with sharp eyes. In performing sex, there is loss of shukra dathu( sperms). This shukra dathu is produced by the food we take. This food is digetsed by digestive fire and first of all prepares ras dathu then rakta( blood) , mansa( muscles), medha( fats), asthi( bone), majja( bone marrow) and lastly shukra( sperms). So it is "saar" ( important part) of all the dathu. Later on this shukra converts in to ojuas which is called life support of the body. So to maintain the life power it is important to maintain the ojus in the body. Ojus gives vitality, energy, power and makes you look healthy and young. So if ojus is in good state, body will have all these properties. That 's why it becomes necessary to save the shukra dathu. Shukra dathu is saved during performing brahmcharya. Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada, Nayan.
