Guest guest
Any comments on the following? One point that comes to mind is that even a good medicine may not necessarily be allowed for Vaisnavas. For example, garlic is forbidden for devotees even though it apparently has good therapeutic effects. Some Ayurvedic medicines contain meat and are also not allowed for devotees. As milk mixed with salt is described in the text below as equivalent to meat (reference?), it is unfortunate that even some devotee cookbooks describe salty preparations such as soups and mayonnaise made with milk. In such preparations, could not yogurt should substituted instead? About the ref to a bottle gourd prep given below: I wonder how authentic the mentioned prep is. Is it offered in Visnu temples? This may seem to be getting into hair-splitting, but the main point is: is there any evidence for preps of milk mixed with salt being acceptable for offering to Krsna? ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Letter COM:3043989 (28 lines) Sumithra Krishna (das) JPS (Chennai - IN) 26-Feb-00 10:46 Bhakti Vikasa Swami [22720] Reference: Text COM:3043551 by Bhakti Vikasa Swami Prasada Queries --------------------------- > I'm preparing an essay on the Cooking, Distributing and Honoring of Krsna > Prasada and have some queries to place before the learned devotees, as > follow. Though I do not belong to the category of the "learned devotees", may I submit the following that I read recently? This is from an article in the "Hope this meets you in good health - the Newsletter of the ISKCON Health and Welfare Ministry" by Padmanabha dasa called "My favorite medicines". "There's one very special combination that is extremely good for kapha conditions. When your lungs are congested, add a little turmeric to about 100 ml of milk and boil it for a few seconds. Then take it off the fire and add a little salt. Normally, we should never add salt to milk; it's considred the same as meat. The body will reject this combination by surrounding it with mucus. In this way, mucus will be pulled out of the lungs and the stomach and be passed out in the stool. So drinking hot turmeric-milk with salt is one of the fastest ways to get rid of mucus. It's the best remedy if you feel a cold coming on, because it immeidately dries out the body. The reuslts are practically instantaneous. But this is the only time we should add salt to milk." There's one South Indian traditional recipe where bottle gourd is cooked with milk, salt and jeera. Servant of your servant, Tarini Radha dd.
