Guest guest
Hare Krsna, dear Mahamantra Prabhu. Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. Looks like you have the same old book that I have. I, too, in vain looked for this "intoxication" verse in the BBT Mukunda Mala Stotra when it came out. >So Where is it from? Now I'm not sure.. was it from a commentary on Mukunda >Mala stotram? No idea, but there could be various versions of MMS in circulation, and in such a case one would expect that the BBT chose the most authentic one. The BBT version has 53 verses. The old one (it doesn't give translator's name) has 60. The verse could be a later interpolation. But beautiful it is! Here is another one that is not found in the BBT edition, yet it is beautiful: yat krtam yad karisyami tat sarvam na maya krtam tvaya-krtam tu phala-bhuk tvam eva madhusudana "O Lord Krsna, O killer of the Madhu demon, O rightful enjoyer of the fruits of action, whatever I have been or will be able to do, is not done by me, but by You." And here is yet another one that did not make it into the BBT edition... and I am glad it didn't: ma me stritvam ma ca me syat kubhavo ma murkhatvam ma kudesesu janma mithyadrstin ma ca me syat kadacij jatau jatau visnu-bhakto bhaveyam "Let me never take birth as a woman, or in a wretched condition, or as a fool, or in a sinful country, or bewildered by an untrue conception of life. Let me simply remain a devotee of Lord Visnu, birth after birth." Ys Dhkdd

The > BBT version has 53 verses. The old one (it doesn't give translator's name) > has 60. There are definitely other manuscripts of the MMS, and the "sri govinda" verse appears as text eight in a typewritten manuscript I received some twenty years ago from another devotee--it was said to be the manuscript Prabhupada was working on, but I can't verify this. That version has 60 verses. But the verse also appears as text five in the MMS published as part of H.H. Bhaktisaranga Gosvami Maharaja's _Sri Stava-kalpa-druma_ (pg. 364), published in Vrindaban (Imlitala: Sri Mahaprabhu Mandira, 1959. That version also has 60 verses. I'm sure there are other manuscripts too, but I don't know any more details. > The verse could be a later interpolation. But beautiful it is! In his Dvadasa-stotras, Madhva makes a similar comparison, saying that the name of Krishna is the most potent drug. But I can't recall the verse offhand. > Here is another one that is not found in the BBT edition, yet it is > beautiful: > > yat krtam yad karisyami > tat sarvam na maya krtam > tvaya-krtam tu phala-bhuk > tvam eva madhusudana > > "O Lord Krsna, O killer of the Madhu demon, O rightful enjoyer of the fruits > of action, whatever I have been or will be able to do, is not done by me, > but by You." This appears as text 20 in both Prabhupada's alleged mss. and the SKD MMS. > And here is yet another one that did not make it into the BBT edition... and > I am glad it didn't: > ma me stritvam ma ca me syat kubhavo > ma murkhatvam ma kudesesu janma > mithyadrstin ma ca me syat kadacij > jatau jatau visnu-bhakto bhaveyam > "Let me never take birth as a woman, or in a wretched condition, or as a > fool, or in a sinful country, or bewildered by an untrue conception of life. > Let me simply remain a devotee of Lord Visnu, birth after birth." This one is in Prabhupada's alleged manuscript (text 18), as well as in the SKD version (again, as text 18). Here's one I like: vande mukundam aravinda-dalAyatAkSaM kuNDendu-zaGkha-dazanaM zizu-gopa-vezam | indrAdi-deva-gaNa-vandita-pAda-padmaM vRndAvanAlayam amuM vasudeva-sUnum || "I worship Mukunda, in the form of a cowherd boy, with blooming eyes like lotus petals, with teeth like little jasmine buds, white as the moon, like tiny conchshells. His lotus feet are worshipped by hosts of gods headed by Indra; He is the son of Vasudeva, and His residence is Sri Vrndavana."
