Guest guest
The five-day Bhisma Pancaka Fast Arambhyai ekadAshim pancha dinAni vratam Acarayet bhagavata-pritye bhisma-pancaka yadi sakanuyAt (HBV 16.434) Beginning from the Kartik Haribodhini Ekadashi to Purnima, for five days one has to observe the Bhisma Pancaka Fast for the satisfaction of Lord Krsna, if possible. Th procedure is described in the Kartik Mahatmya of the Padma Purana Vrata Khanda, Skanda Purana, Visnu Rahasya etc. Sanatana Goswami has not elaborated it again in his tika and has advised us to refer to the above sastras. Bhisma Pancaka is a special period for performing austerities for pleasing Lord Hari. Lord Krsna personally gave these five days to Bhismadeva and told him: "Pure devotional service to Me is easily attained by following this vow in Mathura-Vrndavana during Kartika." Begin the fast on the Haribodhini Ekadashi by remembering Sri Bhismadeva. Fast from all grains and beans, eat only onemeal a day (after sunset) of fruits & vegetables. If one can fast completely for five days that is a great austerity. Throughout the fasting period, a devotee should constantly chant the Hare Krsna maha-mantra, worship Radha and Krsna and the Vaisnavas, and give charity to temples & worthy Vaisnavas.
