The option would be to move to another state, which prohibits sentence to death. What is the situation in California? The sastras, however, don't mention about karma, which you take by paying taxes to government. But they mention about opposite case - government takes a part of people's karma. I'm curious myself, if democracy literally means 'power of people', then it may mean that people are sharing karma, which before was destined to a king.
