His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami once told me that we offer obeisances to the guru first, for the above-mentionned reason, and then we may offer different prayers and glorifications to the Deities Themselves.. We get permission from our guru, and then, having gotten his blessings by reciting his pranam mantra, we approach the Deities. Therefore it's recommended to recite various glorifications and prayers to the deities after (and in addition to) chanting our gurus' pranam mantra.
